Why Fatima Zahra (s.a.) preceded Ali (a.s.) in answering the oppressors during the attack

When the oppressors attacked the house of Hazrat Fatima Zahra (s.a.), they found themselves
confronting her (s.a.), rather than Ameerul Momineen, who was their real target.
The oppressor even mocked Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) by addressing Hazrat Fatima Zahra (s.a.):
What is wrong with your cousin? Why did he send you to answer the door as he sat behind the curtain?
She (s.a.) countered: It is your own oppression, you wretch that has forced me to come out thus and has bound you, as also every misguided deviator, with the argument (of personally answering the door).
  • Behaar al-Anwaar v 30 p 293
  • Awaalim al-Uloom v 11 part 2 p 605
By preceding Ameerul Momineen (a.s.), Hazrat Fatima Zahra (s.a.) wanted to signal to Muslims of all time the sheer oppression and deviation of the party that attacked her, despite her position as the daughter of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and the Chief of all Women of Paradise.
When the oppressor learnt that it was Hazrat Fatima Zahra (s.a.) and NOT Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) behind the door, he should have withdrawn. But by forcibly entering the house even after this, he exposed his deep hatred for the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and his infallible progeny, which he had kept concealed all along.

Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) sufficient as sole witness on Fadak: Example of Khuzaimah

In the dispute of Fadak, the rulers insisted that Hazrat Fatima Zahra (s.a.) present two male witnesses (or
equivalent female witnesses). When Hazrat Fatima Zahra (a.s.) presented Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) as witness they rejected his testimony as biased and insisted on other / credible witnesses.
This she (s.a.) did, but those witnesses were also dismissed.
Sole testimony of Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) was sufficient for Fadak
Fact of the matter is that there was no need for rulers to insist on two (male) witnesses when one was enough.
The personality of Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) should have sufficed as a lone witness.
Leave alone Ameerul Momineen (a.s.), by consensus of both sects, Khuzaimah Ibn Thabit was titled Zu-Shahadatain (owner of two witnesses) by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) as he considered his witness equal to two witnesses.
  • Al-Ikhtesaas p 64
Others like Abu Zarr, were also known for their truthfulness and the Muslims of the time never doubt his word.
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) informed:
‘…the green sky has not sheltered, nor has the earth carried a more truthful one than Abu Zarr.’
  • Al-Manaqib of Khwarazmi p 84
  • Faraid al-Simtain v 1 p 166
The credentials of Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) are far higher than those of all other Muslims put together so demanding an additional witness to back his testimony is plain ignorance and stubbornness.
Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) will never deviate others on any issue..and that includes Fadak

Umar's (la) letter to Muawiya (la) regarding the attack on the house of Janabe Zahra (sa)

Umar b. Khattab l.a. wrote a letter to Muaiyah l.a., the contents of which were as follows:

‘I went to the house of Ali, after having decided with others to bring him out of the house. Fatima came out and I told her, ‘Tell Ali to come out and swear the oath of allegiance to Abu Bakr l.a. for all Muslims have done so.’

Fatima replied that Ali was busy in arranging the Quran.

I said, ’Keep this talk aside, tell Ali to come out or else we will forcefully enter the house and bring him out!’

At that moment, Fatima came and stood with her back towards the door and said, ‘O misled liars! What do you say and what do you want from us?’

I addressed her and she said, ‘What do you want O Umar?’

I replied, ‘Why has your cousin sent you here to reply while he remains seated behind veils?’
Fatima said, ‘Your rebellion has brought me out O Umar and I have ended my proof upon you, and every misled is erroneous.’

I said, ‘Keep these vain and womanish words aside and tell Ali to come out of the house.’
She replied, ‘You are not worthy of love and generosity. Do you make us fear the ‘Party of the Devil’ O Umar? Verily the Party of the Devil are the losers!’ (Surah Mujadilah (58): 19)
Hearing this I said, ‘If Ali does not come out of the house, I will bring fuel and kindle a fire and burn down the house along with its dwellers or I will take Ali to the Masjid for (the oath of) allegiance.’

Then I took the whip (of Qunfudh) and struck Fatima with it and told Khalid b. Walid, ‘Bring firewood’, then again I told her, ‘I will burn down the house!’
Fatima said, ‘O enemy of Allah and enemy of the Prophet of Allah s.a.w.a. and the enemy of the Commander of the Faithful!’

Two hands came out from behind the door to stop me from entering the house, however I pushed back the hands and then pushed the door with force, while striking at her hands with the whip, so that she would let go of the door. She wailed and wept due to the intense pain of the whip and her weeping was such a heart-rendering scream that it was as if my heart was going to melt and I almost retreated. Suddenly, I recalled the envy and avarice which I had towards Ali because he was the one that had shed the blood of the eminent Quraish apostates and thus, I kicked at the door, however she had grasped the door such that it would not open. When I kicked at the door, I heard the cry of Fatima and thought that this cry would topple the entire city of Medina.

In this state Fatima called out, ‘O Father! O Prophet of Allah! How do they treat your beloved and your daughter! O Fizza! Hasten to my aid, for by Allah, the child in my womb has been killed.’
I presumed that Fatima had stood with her back to the wall due to the extreme pain of labour and at this point, I pushed at the door with intense force and the door opened. When I entered therein, Fatima came and stood in front of me (even though she was in immense pain), but my intense anger had overwhelmed me as if a veil was cast before my eyes. In this state, I slapped her on her face, striking her veil, and she fell down to the ground.’”

The Holy Prophet (sawa) was Informed About The Oppression During Meraj

"As for your daughter, she will be oppressed and deprived, and the rights which you gave her will be usurped. She will be beaten while she is pregnant, her sanctity will be breached, and her house will be entered without permission. Then she will be humiliated and disrespected. She will find no protector, she will suffer from a miscarriage because she will be beaten, and she will die as a result of that beating."

Hammad ibn Usman narrates from Imam Jafar Sadiq (as):Abu Abdillah [Imam Sadiq (as)] said:

When the Prophet (saww) was taken to the heavens on his journey (at night), he was told, "Verily Allah, the Blessed and the Exalted, will test you with three afflictions to see how patient you will be."

The Prophet (saww) replied, "I submit to Your command, O Lord. And I have no power to stay patient except through You. What are the three tests?"

He was told, "The first (test) is hunger and giving preference to the needy over yourself and your family."

The Prophet (saww); replied, "I have accepted, O Lord. I am pleased (with Your Will) and I submit to it, and I seek success and patience with You."

He was told:
The second (test) is that you will be belied and you will be in extreme fear (for your life). You should spend your wealth, your blood, and your soul fighting against the people of disbelief, you should remain patient when you will be harassed by the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and you should remain patient when you will be hurt and wounded in battles.

The Prophet (saww) replied, "I have accepted, O Lord. I am pleased (with Your Will) and I submit to it, and I seek success and patience with You."

He was told, "The third test is that your family will be killed after you. As for your brother, 'Ali, your nation will slander and rebuke him, they will be violent with him, they will deprive him and usurp his rights, they will oppress him, and finally they will kill him."

The Prophet (saww) replied, "I have accepted, O Lord. And I am pleased (with Your Will), and I seek success and patience with You."

He was told: As for your daughter, she will be oppressed and deprived, and the rights which you gave her will be usurped. She will be beaten while she is pregnant, her sanctity will be breached, and her house will be entered without permission. Then she will be humiliated and disrespected. She will find no protector, she will suffer from a miscarriage because she will be beaten, and she will die as a result of that beating.

Are these References not sufficent for Muslims??

Setting fire to the house of Hazrat Fatemah (s.a.) is an evident truth narrated by the scholars of the Shiah sect. All Shiah scholars, compilers, traditionalists and historians are united on this point. One who denies the incident (regardless of his stature) or creates doubts in the minds of others is not even a Shiah, let alone a Shiah scholar.

This incident has been narrated by the Sunnis in their books. We have narrated the incident and traditions from the Sunnis sources so as to leave no doubt in the minds of unbiased readers. Our primary objective is to dispel the doubts and confusions that are apparent in some of the books of the Sunnis. Another objective is to expose the conspiracy of the leading personalities of the time to grievously harm the Prophet’s (s.a.w.a.) household, if not eliminate them completely. What we have not narrated, what has not been clearly highlighted in the books or has been omitted knowingly by the compilers is an independent discussion by itself.

We have presented only what has been narrated unambiguously in the books of the Sunnis.

1. Threatening to set the house on fire
According to some traditions:

Umar Ibn Khattaab threatened to set the house (of Hazrat Faatemah) on fire. We will first narrate from Ibn Abi Shaybah’s book Al-Musannif. It should be noted that Ibn Abi Shaybah was among the teachers of Bukhari. He passed away in 235 AH.

Ibne Abi Shaybah has recorded this incident with the chain of narrators on the authority of Zaid Ibn Aslam who narrates from his father Aslam. Aslam (Umar’s slave) relates:

‘When the people paid allegiance to Abu Bakr after the Prophet’s demise, Ali and Zubair used to visit Fatemaah’s house and consult with her in the matter. When Umar learnt of this, he proceeded to Fatemaaah’s house and said – O daughter of the Prophet, by Allah there is none more beloved to me than your father. And after your father there is none more beloved to me than you. By Allah (despite this) if these people gather at your house nothing will stop me from burning your house down.  [1]

TRADITIONS FROM HOLY PROPHET ( SAWA) REGARDING OPPRESSIONS ON JANABE ZAHRA (SA)

The Calamities befalling Hazrat Faatemah Zahra (s.a.)

Saeed b. Jubair narrates from Ibne Abbas: One day the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) was sitting when Imam Hasan (a.s.) entered. He (s.a.w.a.) welcomed him and delightfully seated him on his right lap. Then Imam Husain (a.s.) entered. He (s.a.w.a.) welcomed him and seated him on his left lap. Then Hazrat Faatemah Zahra (s.a.) came and sat alongside Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). After that Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) came and sat on the right of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.).
Then the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.s) began weeping incessantly.
Someone asked: O Messenger of Allah! What has caused you grief?
Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) then revealed their virtues and the sufferings they would face in his absence. When the discussion reached Hazrat Zahra (s.a.), after elucidating her virtues, he (s.a.w.a.) said: When I see her, I remember the afflictions that will befall her after me.

TRADITIONS FROM THE BOOK OF SULAYM IBNE QAYS E HILALI

Kitab-e- Sulaym Ibn Qays Al-Hilali

The greatness and esteemed value of this book can be gauged by the hadith of Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq a.s that whoever does not possess this book does not have anything from The Ahlul Bayt AS. This is a book that has received endorsement from five Infallible Imams. This is the first book of the Shi’a containing knowledge of Traditions, History, Theology and Commentary. The author was born in Kufa and came to Madinah but was not able to see The Prophet SAWW. However, he was a trustworthy companion to Five A’immah AS. Many a renowned Sunni traditionalists have quoted ahadith from Sulaym and this is a sure endorsement of his authenticity. Sulaym’s book comprises 91 ahadith, which are illuminating, revealing and heart-rending for the oppression heaped upon Ahlul Bayt a.s after the demise of The Prophet SAWW cannot but move the reader.

Narrations from Imam Kazim (as) about persecutions upon Hazrat Zahra (sa)

The Holy Prophet (sawa) said, “The door of Fatima (A.S.) is my door, her house is mine; so, whoever violates its sanctity violates the sanctity of Allah’s barrier.”

`Allama al-Majlisi, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, has transmitted from Kitab al-Taraf by the great `allama Sayyid Ibn Tawas, from Kitab al-Wasiyya by Shaikh `asa ibn al-Mustafad al-Darar from Masa ibn Ja`fer from his father saying that when the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) was about to leave this world for the next, he said, “O men of the Ansar! Parting is opportune… The door of Fatima (A.S.) is my door, her house is mine; so, whoever violates its sanctity violates the sanctity of Allah’s barrier.” `asa goes on to say that the father of al-Hasan (A.S.) wept for a long time. He discontinued his narrative then said, “By Allah! Allah’s barrier was violated! By Allah! Allah’s barrier was violated! By Allah! Allah’s barrier was violated! O nation blessed by Allah!”[1]

Narrations from Imam Sadiq (as) about persecutions upon Hazrat Zahra (sa)

When the Prophet (A.S.) was taken for the night journey, it was said to him that Allah would test him in three instances. So the angel kept counting them till he said, “As for your daughter Fatima (A.S.), she will be oppressed and deprived and her right will be confiscated, the inheritance which you will leave her. And she will be hit while she is pregnant; insults and humiliation will affect her, then she will miscarry what is in her womb and be beaten, and she will die from such beating… The first to raise a complaint against his killer (on the Day of Judgment) will be Mohsin son of Ali (A.S.), then Qunfuz and his fellow (Abu Bakr) will be brought…”

Narrations from Imam Baqir (as) or Imam Sadiq (as) regarding Hazrat Fatema (sa) - II

Then `Omer set out with a torch in his hand and wanted to burn Ali (A.S.), Fatima (A.S.), al-Hasan (A.S.) and al-Husain (A.S.).

Allama al-`Ayyashi, may Allah have mercy on him, has cited one of these Imams (A.S.) narrating a lengthy tradition at the end of which he (A.S.) said,
Abu Bakr sent him a message to go there to swear the oath of allegiance to him. Ali (A.S.) said, “I shall not come out till I finish compiling the Qur’an.” He sent for him again. He said, “I shall not come out till I am through.” Abu Bakr sent for him a third time a cousin of his called Qunfuz Fatima (A.S.) daughter of the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) went out to act as a barrier between the men and Ali (A.S.). Qunfath hit her, returning without Ali (A.S.). It was feared that he would amass a group of opponents. Abu Bakr ordered firewood to be brought and placed around Ali’s house. Then `Umar set out with a torch in his hand and wanted to burn Ali (A.S.), Fatima (A.S.), al-Hasan (A.S.) and al-Husain (A.S.). When Ali (A.S.) saw all of that, he was forced to come out to swear fealty against his wish.[1]

Narrations from Imam Ali (as) about the persecution of Hazrat Fatema (sa)

Imam Ali (as) said to Umar, “It is the fire that you ignited at the door of my house in order to burn me and to burn Fatima (A.S.), daughter of the Messenger of Allah (A.S.), and burn my sons, al-Hasan (A.S.) and al-Husain (A.S.) and also burn my daughters Zainab and Umm Kulthum…, etc.”

SALIM ibn Qais has narrated saying that `Umar ibn al-Khattab once fined all his governors half of their salaries, exempting Qunfuz al-`Adawi from such a fine, and he was one of such governors. He even returned to him what he had taken away from him, the sum of twenty thousand dirhams. Nor did he deduct the tilth, nor half the tilth. Aban said that SALIM has said, “I met Ali (A.S.) and asked him about what he thought regarding what `Umar had done. He said, `Do you know why he (`Umar) exempted Qunfuz and did not fine him or deduct anything from his salary?’ I said, `No.’ He said, `Because he is the one who hit Fatima, peace and blessings of Allah be upon her, with the whip when she came to act as a barrier between me and them. So she died, peace and blessings of Allah be upon her, and there was still a mark on her wrist like a bracelet.’”[1]

The Attack on the house of Janabe Zahra (sa) Part 1

The crowd left towards the house of Hazrat Ali (a.s.). The harbored the intention of burning down the house along with the inhabitants.[1] Ibn Abi Ka’ab reports that we heard the neighing of horses, the clatter of bridles and the clanging of spears. We left our houses. The crowd had already gathered at the house of Hazrat Ali (a.s.).[2] Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) was standing behind the door. There was a bandage on her head. It was obvious that she had been weakened by the relentless grief for her father[3] – the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). When she saw the approaching crowd, she shut the door to her house. She was confident that these people would not enter the house without her permission.[4]

The people reached the door and knocked on it with great force.[5] They began pushing and pulling at the door violently. They kept on hurling abuses at the inhabitants of the house[6] and insisting that they do the bay’at of Abu Bakr.[7] Umar shouted, “O son of Abu Talib, open the door![8] I swear by Allah that if you do not open the door, I will burn it down.[9] I swear by the One in whose Hands is my life, come out and do bay’at or else I will set this house on fire. O Ali, come out and accept the verdict of the people, or else we will wage war with you.[10]

Preparation of the attack on the house of J. Zahra (sa) - Part 2

Umar said to Abu Bakr, “What stops you from summoning him (Hazrat Ali (a.s.)) and forcing him to submit to your caliphate?[1] If you are unable to do so, I am most certainly capable of it.” Then he stepped out in a fit of rage and called his tribesmen and his family members, “Answer the call of the caliph of the Prophet (s.a.w.)!” At this call, the people began gathering in the Masjid of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). At that moment, Umar said to Abu Bakr, “I have arranged riders and foot soldiers for you”[2] Abu Bakr, seeing this spectacle said, “Now should we send somebody to his house?”

Preparation of the attack on the house of J. Zahra (sa) - Part 1

When Abu Bakr was informed that few of those who had not given bay’at to him were sitting along with Ameerul Mo’meneen Hazrat Ali (a.s.), he sent Umar with a large group to the house of Hazrat Ali (a.s.)[1]. Umar asked for the people to come out, but they refused. Umar ordered for some wood to be brought and said, “By the One in whose Hands is my life! If you do not come out, I will burn the house down along with its inhabitants.” The people told him, “O Abu Hafas, Fatemah (s.a.) is there in the house.” He replied, “So what!”[2]

Umar sought permission to enter the house of Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.), but it was not granted to him. At this, Umar created a huge uproar and began threatening the people.[3]

[1] Al Ihtejaj, page 80
[2] Al Imamah was Siyasah, volume 1 page 19. I humbly state that Allamah Tabarsi has narrated this part from Abdulah Ibne’ Abdur Rahman (Ibne’ Qutaybah has also narrated from him) thus – when Umar realised that these people would not swear allegiance, he said, “I don’t care for you (meaning, I will burn this house). Because I have decided to frighten you.” Al Ihtejaj, page 80; Behaarul Anwaar, volume 28 page 204. There is no doubt that this tradition has been tampered with, for how wil a Sunni write that Umar said, “even though Fatemah be in this house.” While the Shiahs quote this tradition as it is! It may be possible that the narrator may have been in Taqaiyyah (dissimulation) and did not dare to quote the tradition explicitly.

Visits to the house of Janbe Zahra (sa) - Part 4

Abu Bakr is calling you.

Abu Bakr then asked Qunfuz to go and tell Hazrat Ali (a.s.) that Abu Bakr is calling you.

Hazrat Ali (a.s.) on hearing the message of Qunfuz returned him saying that, “I am busy in the work which my friend, my brother entrusted me with. You go back to Abu Bakr and to the one who has collected oppression around him.”[1]
